About Omiyage Kokeshi dolls
These vintage Kokeshi dolls are called “Omiyage Kokeshi” or “Syogyo Kokeshi”. Omiyage means souvenirs, Syogyo means commercial in Japanese.
Omiyage Kokeshi were mainly created in Kanagawa prefecture and Yamagata prefecture in Japan. Yamagata prefecture is the place where I, Junko was born in.
What’s good about Omiyage Kokeshi is that their design isn’t restricted by traditional Kokeshi making rules, which allows them to be very unique shapes.
As you can see in the pictures, not a single doll has the same face and design. Every doll has distinctive features.
Omiyage Kokeshi in these days
You can’t see Omiyage Kokeshi dolls sold in today’s Japan. They’ve disappeared from the commercial market and we seldom see them in our daily life.
We look for vintage Kokeshi dolls at Japanese antique markets, or visit old rural houses and ask them to sell their old belongings. It’s like a treasure hunt!
If you want to find your favorite doll, then please visit our eBay store. We’re waiting for you with various dolls 🙂
