Japanese Karate has its origin in Okinawa prefecture. It was originally traditional martial arts inherited in the Okinawa area.
Later it was influenced by Chinese martial arts and got to be called “TOUTE”.
TOU meant China!
The kanji symbol TOU can read KARA. Since a Karate fighter fights with no weapon, the KARA kanji was replaced with the current KARA symbol that means “empty”.
Additionally, the “empty” kanji is related to the word “TOSHUKUUKEN”.
TO = empty handed
SHU = hand
KUU = empty
KEN = fist
It’s a word that stands for “empty-handed” or “have nothing excerpt for myself”. Did you notice the KUU and the Karate’s KARA use the same kanji character?
