How to read
death, die, cease
It gives ominous and dark impressions. This is a kanji letter that has a high impact.
The left part of the character pictures weathered bones left in a field. The right part is a shape of a person who kneels at the side of the bones. That makes the letter of death stands for a person who prays for the dead.
We can’t picture the death itself because it doesn’t have any shape. What we can shape is what we are against one’s death.
This kanji teaches us the fact that ancient people showed respect to the dead and gave them burials.
Itadori Yuji in Jujutsu Kaisen pursues “righteous death” in the story. I think it has the same side of the origin of the “death” character. It’s not the dead himself, but the people left behind who give the meaning and unseen shape for its death.
