Meanings
AKU = bad, not right, incomfortable
MA = magic, an evil demon that confuse the people

Do you have the devil in Japan?

I think YOKAI and ONI are something similar to the Western devil. Yokai is a Japanese monster and Oni is a demon with horns.

Then the word AKUMA is new?

No. We had it as a Buddhism word from long ago. When the Western devil was introduced in Japan, we used the word for the translation.
Now the AKUMA got very common thanks to many video games, anime, and manga in which devils appear.
Impressions
It gives evil and strong impressions. The AKU symbol has a simply bad image and the MA gives a mysterious image.

Though this is just my personal opinion, it’s like the AKU is something bad existence or things humans can do and the MA is something beyond human power.
