All about LION in Japanese!
Lion says SHISHI in Japanese.
We usually call a lion in almost the same way as English “la-i-on”. The Japanese word SHISHI is generally used for something cultural or traditional idioms.

Ah, that’s because the word SHISHI is from a foreign word and these kanji letters are chosen to express the sound. Originally, we don’t have a lion in Japan!
We have a traditional religious dance called “SHISHIMAI (lion dance)” in Japan. The dance was widespread with Buddhism and got to be performed among the people as an auspicious event.

It’s said that you will be clever if you get your head bit by a Shishimai doll. When the Shishimai is played at a festival, little kids gather to the Shishimai doll and give their heads for biting!
