Meanings and background
FUKU = two or more, repeat, complicated
SHU = a foe you ought to avenge
The FUKU symbol alone doesn’t give any scary impression but when combined with SHU, it gets direful sound.
The shape of the FUKU kanji originally pictures that someone is trying to fix an overturned liquor pot. That makes the meaning “to put something back to the original place”.
When it comes to vengeance, you’ll put something you got from the opponent back to him/her. That’s why the symbol FUKU is used.
The second letter SHU has the meanings of “reply” or “countercharge”. It’s the character that represents to repay something to others.
