Kanji and meanings of Okkotsu’s name
One of the strongest Jujutsu sorcerer among young sorcerers, Okkotsu Yuta. His name gives a bit lonely impression because of his kanji letters.
I feel it can’t be helped thinking about his sad background. If you don’t know that yet, read the Jujutsu Kaisen vol.0! It’s the prequel story of Jujutsu Kaisen and not animated. Okkotsu Yuta’s story and Gojo Satoru’s past is described in it.
The first letter reads OTSU and the second one does KOTSU. Two sounds are combined and that makes OKKOTSU, like a liaison in English pronunciation.
OTSU is a kanji letter that stands for admirable or second order. KOTSU means a bone. An admirable bone? It doesn’t make sense and you’re right. The word OKKOTSU isn’t a daily word and it’s derived from the name of place, OKKOTSUBARA in Nagano prefecture in Japan.
According to one theory, the place was named Okkotsubara because there were only a few houses here and there. OTSU has the meaning of the second rank. We can guess lower rank + bones = only a few people = OKKOTSU!
This kanji means to sorrow or to grieve. It’s a sad letter and we don’t use it for person’s name usually. Instead, we use this kanji for a sound YU.
For whom Okkotsu Yuta is grieving? The answer is clear, Rika😭
The shape of the YU letter pictures a person who lost a precious person. Let’s see the gentle YU this time. This kanji is made by adding a part on its left side. The part stands for a person who is cuddling up for the grieving one.
Did the Mr. Akutami, the author of Jujutsu Kaisen, know these facts and choose this kanji for Yuta? If so, I wonder who will be the one to stand by Okkotsu. Is it Rika, or Itadori Yuji?
In the latest chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen’s manga, Okkotsu is making a ominous remark. I hope him to be gentle Yuta!
TA means “very” or “big” and it’s the most common suffix for Japanese boy names. You’ll see many other Japanese names that end with TA, like Shota, Ryota, Yuta and Kenta.
