Hi there, Junko from Japan here! You might be asking, “did Shinazugawa Genya die in Demon Slayer?” or even, “how did Genya die?” The answer is yes, but it’s not in the Swordsmith Village arc but at the very end of the story.
Genya’s Death: How Does He Die?
Genya died in the battle against Kokushibo at the Mugen Castle, which was a part of the decisive battle against Muzan. It’s Kokushibo who killed Genya.
At the Mugen Castle, Genya confronted Kokushibo, the Upper Rank 1 of the Twelve Kizuki, together with Tokito Muichiro. But Kokushibo’s strength was overwhelming and Genya got his body split in two. Himejima Gyomei rushed to the battle yet Kokushibo had an advantage.
The Turning Point in Genya’s Death
The situation was doomed, but Tanjiro’s words motivated Genya: “The weakest person has the biggest potential.” He took advantage of the fact that Kokushibo didn’t pay attention to him, and sneakily ate the broken sword of Kokushibo that was made from Kokushibo’s own body.
Do you remember Genya can eat and absorb demon ability? By having Kokushibo’s sword, Genya got demonized and even obtained the Demon Blood Art. With this power, he contributed to the fight by restricting Kokushibo’s free movement.
Shinazugawa Sanemi came and joined there, and they managed to destroy Kokshibo at the cost of Muichiro and Genya’s death.
Sanemi’s True Feelings Toward His Younger Brother
Before his death, Genya apologized to Shinazugawa Samine for what he did. He had regret that he blamed Sanemi for killing their mother without knowing she was turning into a demon.
Genya confessed his true feelings for Sanemi.
“I wanted to protect you as you had done to me”
“You must become happy since you had so many painful things”
“My big bro is the kindest in the world”
Sanemi cried to see his body collapsing like a demon. At last, Genya knew that his brother didn’t hate him at all. The reason Sanemi became a Demon Slayer swordsman and fought was to protect his younger brother’s peaceful life.
He pretended to hate Genya to keep him away from the Demon Slayer Corps so that he could live as an ordinary person.
“It’s all right, your bro will do something no matter what”
“You’ve never caused me any trouble!”
“Please god, don’t take my younger brother away!”
Genya’s Death in Demon Slayer
At last, Genya’s body was gone and vanished like a demon. This is how Genya died. His last words were “Thank you, big bro.”
You may think if his body became a demon, his wound must have regenerated. But Genya temporarily absorbs the demon’s ability by eating its fresh. So if he loses much blood, the power he got also runs out.
Honestly, I wasn’t interested in the Shinazugawa brothers until I read Genya’s death episode. After reading it, my impression of them completely changed.
They’re not rough and wild men, but one of the most affectionate and beautiful brothers like Itachi and Sasuke in NARUTO!
