Hi, it’s Junko from Japan! Ever found yourself asking, “Will Tanjiro die at the end of Demon Slayer?” or “Is Tanjiro dead?” The answer is both YES and NO.
Tanjiro’s death is a significant turning point in the series. He dies once, gets resurrected as a demon, and eventually returns to being a human during the final battle against Kibutsuji Muzan.
So, when someone asks, “Will Tanjiro die?” the answer is yes, but he comes back to life. Intriguing, right?
In this post, I’ll explain in detail what happens to Tanjiro at the end of Demon Slayer, answering queries like “How does Tanjiro die?” and “Is Tanjiro dead in the end?”
How Does Tanjiro Die?
So, how does Tanjiro die, you ask? It happens during the intense fight at the Mugen Castle. Tanjiro encounters Kibutsuji Muzan and suffers a devastating attack on his right eye, receiving a lethal injection of Muzan’s blood. This blood acts as a deadly poison that continuously destroys human cells, causing Tanjiro to lose consciousness.
Despite the grim situation, Yushiro manages to treat Tanjiro, and his pulse returns. Meanwhile, Muzan overwhelms the Demon Slayer swordsmen, who fall one by one. Just as Muzan tries to finish off Kanao, Tanjiro re-enters the battle and strikes Muzan with the Sun Breathing technique.
The Birth of the Demon King
Before Muzan completely vanishes, he transfers all his power into Tanjiro, turning him into the “Demon King” who inherits everything from Muzan. At this point, Tanjiro isn’t just dead; he’s evolved into the strongest demon ever to exist.
Come Back to Life as a Human
In the face of Tanjiro’s newfound demonic powers, even the desperate attempts of Giyu, Zenitsu, and Inosuke fail to stop him. It is at this crucial moment that Nezuko arrives. Thanks to medicine from Lady Tamayo, Nezuko has turned back into a human.
Nezuko tackles Tanjiro to halt his rampage. Although he injures her, for some reason, he does not try to consume her. At this time, Kanao appears with the medicine that can turn a demon back into a human.
Despite risking her remaining left eye, Kanao uses the final form of the Flower Breathing technique to inject the medicine into Tanjiro.
The medicine works, and Tanjiro is revived as a human. Finally, the query “Is Tanjiro dead?” can be answered: no, he’s not. Muzan and the demons are driven away from this world for good.
If Tanjiro hadn’t become a demon, he would have surely died. But his body was fully recovered by becoming a demon. In a way, this demonization saved his life while Tanjiro’s death and the Demon King caused immense despair for everyone.
