KAN = feel, sense
SHA = apologize, thank, reward
What Do These Gratitude Kanji Characters Mean?
We need two Kanji symbols for gratitude. It doesn’t mean “gratitude” if you use each symbol alone. Especially, the second SHA letter is usually used for “apologize” or “sorry,” and it doesn’t give a positive impression. But when used with the first letter KAN, they make the meaning of “gratitude.”
It’s said that the KAN symbol originally described “your heart was moved by something,” and the second SHA was for “saying words.” When these two Kanji were combined, that made the meaning “you were moved by someone and told it in words.”
Based on the original Kanji letters, the Japanese word KANSHA is “to convey your grateful feelings to others”.
