Hi, Junko from Japan here! Does Tanjiro become a HASHIRA in Demon Slayer? Let me get straight to the point. Tanjiro doesn’t become a Hashira.
It seems his level is very close to the Hashira warrior since Tomioka Giyu, the Water Hashira, valued that his strength was almost reaching that of the Hashira swordsmen. Also, he expected Tanjiro to become the Water Hashira.
2 Conditions to Become Haashira
You have to meet 2 conditions to become the Hashira swordsman in the Demon Slayer Corps. Here are the conditions officially announced by Mr. Gotoge, the author of Demon Slayer.
- defeat 50 demons or beat at least one demon that belongs to the Twelve Kizuki.
- have reached the top rank out of the 10 classes of Demon Slayer swordsmen

- KINOE
- KINOTO
- HINOE (Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke)
- HINOTO
- TSUCHINOE
- TUCHINOTO
- KANOE
- KANOTO
- MIZUNOE
- MIZUNOTO
These words come from an ancient calendar called ZIKKAN. The word ZI means “10” and the Zikkan divides a month per 10 days. In a nutshell, one week is 7 days in the current calendar, but it becomes 10 days in the Zikkan one.
Why Is Tanjiro Not a Hashira?
Tanjiro has fought several Twelve Kizuki demons and beat them, but he didn’t win alone and always had the Hashira fellows beside him. So it seems Tanjiro doesn’t meet the first requirement in a precise way while his achievements are outstanding.
As for the second condition, Tanjiro’s last class is HINOE, the 3rd rank out of the 10 classes. It doesn’t meet the Hashira condition either.
As a result, the Demon Slayer ended before Tanjiro becomes Hashira. He stayed the Hinoe-ranked swordsman even in season 3. But I think he must get to the Hashira rank if the battle against Kibutsuji Muzan took place later!
