Hello from Japan, it’s Junko! Today, we’re journeying into the heart of Demon Slayer, with a spotlight on the mysterious Moon Breathing techniques.

These techniques, a creation of Kokushibo, the Upper Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki, are as intriguing as they are formidable. Did you know that Kokushibo’s younger brother is none other than Tsugikuni Yoriichi, the founder of Sun Breathing?

Decoding Moon Breathing Techniques

The Moon Breathing style stands unique and currently lacks practitioners among the Demon Slayers. However, the impact of these techniques is far-reaching, echoing the potent power and enigmatic nature of the Demon Slayer universe.

The 16 Majestic Forms of Moon Breathing

Moon Breathing manifests in sixteen distinctive forms, each with its unique potency and function. Let’s delve into these forms:

First Form: Yamizuki Yoinomiya

Means “dark moon, evening palace” in Japanese. A quick slash from an instant sword drawing. Even this simple attack involves crescent waves and it’s hard to avoid them.

Second Form: Shuka no Rogetsu

A triple attack that stands for “gem flowers moon viewing” in Japanese.

Third Form: Enkizki Tugari

Means “grudge moon elimination” in Japanese. Unleash two different-shaped slashes one after another.

Fifth Form: Geppaku Saika

Represents “moon fairy disaster” and makes hurricane-like slashes appear on the spot without moving a sword.

Sixth Form: Tokoyo Kogetsu Muken

Unleash multiple attacks with a wide range in front of Kokushibo, meaning “everlasting arc moon limitless.”

Seventh Form: Yakkyo Tsukibae

Means “calamity mirror moon reflection.” Unleash five slashes that crawl on the ground from a distance.

Eighth Form: Geturyu Rinbi

Powerful horizontal slash with crescent waves. Stands for “moon dragon ring tail” in Japanese.

Nineth Form: Kudarizuki Renmen

Means “missing moon serial surface.” Unleash countless slashes from the overhead of the opponent.

Tenth Form: Senmenzan Ragetsu

Grind the opponent with two enormous rotating blades. Indicates “surface pierce slash moonlight” in Japanese.

Fourteenth Form: Kyohen Tenman Sengetsu

A wide-range attack that involves spiral slashes unleashed continuously. Means “sinister filling heaven thin moon.”

Sixteenth Form: Gekko Katawarezuki

Stands for “moon rainbow half broken moon.” Drop multiple slashes from overhead like lightning.

Kokushibo’s Unique Combat Style: Fusing Moon Breathing with Blood Demon Art

One of the captivating aspects of Demon Slayer is the unique combat style of each demon from the Twelve Kizuki. They all utilize their unique Blood Demon Art in battle.

Kokushibo, a master of Breathing techniques, had an exceptional style that amplified his Blood Demon Art through Moon Breathing. This fusion contributed to his formidable and fearsome strength as an Upper Rank 1.

Demon Slayer Corps’ swordsmen visualize effects such as water or flames when using their breathing techniques. Yet, these are NOT actual attacks but mere presentations of their sword techniques.

The creator of Demon Slayer clarified this interesting detail. It’s the swordsman’s sheer determination and fighting spirit that create the illusion of water or flames. The more refined the swordsman, the more pronounced this presentation effect becomes.

However, Kokushibo’s Moon Breathing techniques stand apart. The crescent-shaped slashes that manifest when he employs Moon Breathing serve as tangible attacks. Some forms even allow him to unleash a barrage of crescent blades from his entire body.

Given these facts, it’s believed that Kokushibo’s attacks are rooted in Blood Demon Art, bolstered by the power of Moon Breathing.

How many forms does Moon Breathing have?

The largest number of forms showcased by Kokushibou in the series is 16. This is the highest count among all the breathing techniques.

However, not all forms from 1 to 16 have been demonstrated in the main story of Demon Slayer. Considering that Kokushibou has been a demon for 400 years, it wouldn’t be surprising if there were forms beyond 17.

As of now, there hasn’t been any mention of the exact number of Moon Breathing forms in official fan books or author comments. So, based on what is known, it can be said that there are 16 forms.
